An open letter to young workers unsure of themselves

If you are a young worker, the workplace can be a mystery. You wonder: what
does my boss think? What does his boss think? What do any of the people I
work with or for think? It can seem perplexing and mysterious.

You may make assumptions to address these mysteries. If you assume
correctly, that may work out, but otherwise it could make your life
difficult. What to do?

First off, you should know that just like you, many people (if not most)
are dealing with uncertainty. They too have bosses and other people they
need to answer to and they are trying to address that same type of
uncertainty. That's why their behavoir can change suddenly: they were
working under an assumption that was no longer holds.

Therefore recognize uncertainty is like change: it is a constant thing to
deal with by everyone. You can address it best by working out plans with
your boss and gaining agreement on them.

Yet even here, you may have difficulty. For your boss might be so
overloaded she may not be able to best advise you. In which case you need
to come up with plans independently and put them in front of your boss to
approve. You want to make it easy for your boss.

Remember that most bosses don't have too much time to think about what you
are doing.
