On the importance of artists to produce many types of work, great and small
September 25 2010, 4:42 PM
Wendy Tancock created this whimsical plate that I purchased many years ago.
I wonder what she thought when she made it. I assume it wasn't the
highlight of her artistic career. Perhaps she thought: this would make a
good phrase to go on a plate, then chose an image to go with the phrase.
Nothing that took up much of her time. Something simple yet satisfying.
Then forgot about it.
we have. I love that song, the phrase she chose, and especially the image
and even the font. I have served many a bowl of delicious food to myself
and my kids. Whenever I have piled a bowl of pasta or stew in there for my
kids, I have thought to myself: yes, you are my sunshine. This long winded story is simply an example of why artists should neither
give up nor underestimate the signifigance of even the smallest, slightest
work that they do. For even a simple work can become a treasure to someone
else, and it can become an important part of their lives. It can become a
slice of sunshine, so to speak. And so I would encourage artists to keep
producing work and keep selling and sharing their work. You will do more
good with it than you may ever know.
