Some short thoughts on millennials and boomers for #ideas2010 after chatting with @remarkk

I just started having this conversation with Mark Kuznicki on Twitter re: millennials and boomers:

@remarkk Boomers seem to think that Millennials have a lack of sense of the collective/community belonging. Do you agree? #ideas2010
@blm849 @remarkk I think Millennials have no need for Boomers, and Boomers aren't used to/don't like that.  #ideas2010
@remarkk @blm849 Do you actually believe that's true? No wisdom exists over the age of 30? No lessons to learn? No resources to help? #ideas2010

Now with one major caveat*, I should have stated that " I think Millennials *believe they* have no need for Boomers, and Boomers aren't used to/don't like that." By that, I believe that millennials think boomers are outdated and obsolete because of their lack of - mainly digital - skills and their outmoded ideas of success, as well as for their level of self importance. I think boomers don't like that because boomers have been dominating the mainstream media since the 1960s and for a variety of reasons they no longer do, and they resent that.

Now, do I believe that about boomers and millenials? No. Technically I am a boomer, but I am at the cusp of that generation. But I do believe that many boomers have a great sense of self importance which is unwarranted.  Plus they are old now, and they make a classic mistake of thinking that anyone who does things differently are doing it wrong. I also think millenials, like any new generation, have much greater confidence in their abilities than is warranted also. Ultimately, both can learn from each other and neither is better than the other.

Anyway, these are some quick notes  I threw together on the subject.

* The major caveat is that people are much more than their generation. Generation generalizations are very crude. You can draw some distinctions, but they should be very general and loosely applied. In some ways, generation generalizations should be treated like a prejudice.
