On idiot runners (and how not to be one)
April 24 2011, 2:27 PM
Standing on the corner of a busy intersection today, this runner jogged
past me and into the intersection without looking (it seemed) and with
earphones on. He looked annoyed when a car came close to hitting him. Why would he do something idiotic like this? My suspicion is that he didn't
want his heart rate to drop. I see this a lot when people bob back and
forth, waiting for the light to change. First of all, if you are run down,
your hear rate will drop considerably, perhaps as low as zero. Second, I
often wear heart monitors, and my heart rate drops down, but no more than
it does going down hill, and as soon as I start running again it picks up
and levels off. Yours will too. So be cool: stop, catch your breath, wait
for the light, cross safely. Don't be an idiot. Other ways to be an idiot:
- assume cars can see you or care to see you, especially at night.
- run on the street with the traffic behind you
- dash in and out around parked cars
- run fast when there is lots of black ice I've seen people do all these things. It's stupid. Don't be stupid: take
care when you run. You are trying to improve your life, not end it.
