Some thoughts on Rio

My son was excited about this film for sometime, which is not surprising,
since every kid film we've seen in awhile had a trailer for it. Here's some
randome thoughts on it:
- Visually Rio is very appealing. It very colourful, and it is shot in a
way to justify it's 3D. I still think 3D is a waste and a ripoff, but Rio
at least takes better care how it uses it compared to other kids films.
- The city itself comes across well in terms of its beauty. Some of the
evening shots of Rio at night are beautifully romantic. It is filmed the
way Paris is filmed.
- It's humourous but not really funny. Perhaps it's the voice actors, but
there is something missing in the comedy part of it. Lots of things that
make you smile: not a lot that had me laughing out loud.
- It's actually a mix of crime and rom-com, with heavy heapings of both. My
son was disappointed in all the romance, but I thought it fit well into the
picture.
- I wasn't surprised that it showed Rio's beauty. I was surprised it showed
it's poverty and sexuality. It didn't dwell on it, but it didn't tried to
make the anything but Brazilians. It's still a kids movie, but it was not
puritanical, nor did it gloss over the hard conditions of some who live
there.
-For Americans, Minnesota must seem like the far north. It is certainly
meant to be a huge contrast to the citizens of Rio.
- The story is very much by the book. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by
that. It's likely too much to ask for something more suspenseful, and maybe
for kids that is fine.
- I enjoyed the film. And compared to a lot of other animation, it's very
good. It still comes in second to anything Pixar does, though, with perhaps
the exception of Cars, which I find the weakest of the Pixar films.
