Gameification and domestication: some thoughts on gaming the family
family playing the game together. I am willing to bet that happens at the
beginning, and then slows down and stops. There are lots of reasons why:
from parents being too busy to kids being a lot better gamers and
overwhelming their mom and dad. Whatever the reasons, I believe it stops.
I play some games with my son, but not a lot. I was thinking about this
today, and I thought what could be good is if the normal, everyday
interaction between parents and kids could be gamified. Kids have
responsibilities to perform and so do parents, but if they could be
incorporated into a game somehow, you could make them more enjoyable. A
trivial example would be this: if a child got a good mark in school or did
extra chores or behaved well, the parent could unlock keys in a game that
the child likes. Or a game could be set up so kids of different ages could
play it, and the better the kids worked together, the better they do. I am
sure people could think of better examplews than this. The point is: rather
than have the games and game systems separate from other family activities,
why not make it part of everyday activities that would make things more
enjoyable overall. We already have Wii Fit: why not have Wii Family
Adventure?
