"Priest" is a hot, beautiful, mess

I thought Priest would be lame but watchable when I went to see iit
tonight. Going in with a pessimistic, the glass is half empty view, I was
pleased that it was better than I thought. First off, it is well acted and well produced. If it had Del Toro directing
it, it might be stellar. As it is, it steals liberally from other movies,
Blade Runner and the second Matrix, and Aliens, to name a few. I was going
to note more, but I gave up and just watched the movie. When it does come
out on DVD, watch it with friends and play a game where you spot the
references. There must be dozens. It is not well written. Hokey comes to mind. If I was 15, I might think it
is awesome: anyone north of 21 likely will not. Likewise the direction is a theft fest, but it moves along well. It is so set up for a sequel, but unless it makes gobs of money, I can't
see a second one. Enjoyed seeing Christopher Plummer: he is perfect for such flicks. Also the
actor who played Bones on Star Trek: it was good to see him. The theology is doubtful, to say the least. It is Christianity as a 13 year
old boy sees it. Overall, though, it was a fun film.

I think even a badly written movie can be redeemed by great classical actors such as Christopher Plummer. I mean, seriously....has he been bad, in ANYTHING? (I think not! :)
Also, the thing about going to movies with a certain degree of skepticism (or, as you put it, pessimism) is a lot like going through life....if your expectations aren't TOO high....everything that turns out well, is like a bonus! : )
I look forward to seeing it. -

And yes, going in with a "well, as long as this isn't totally terrible" attitude really helps give you a better film appreciation! :)
