How to recycle PS2 Guitar Hero instruments on the Wii or PS3 (for non gamer parents)

Recently my son got interested in Guitar Hero. This is bad and good. Bad
because Guitar Hero is on the way out. Good because you can get GH stuff
cheap and reuse/recycle them. Let me explain.

First off, we got the latest version of GH for the Wii. Naturally that
worked fine and he enjoyed that. After playing it awhile, he asked for a
microphone so he could sing too. I shopped around and found out any USB mic
should work, and they go for around $20. However in my shopping around I
found a PS2 version of Band Hero for $9.90 at Toys R Us! It came with
guitar, mic and drums! I figure if only the mic worked, I saved $10 bucks.
And it did! All we needed to do was make sure both Wii controllers were
active and it worked fine. So that was good.

What would have been great was if the drums and second guitar worked. Sadly
it didn't on the Wii. However, I went to Future Shop and found an older
version of GH game for the PS3 for $10 bucks, brought it home, connected
the drums and the mic to the PS3 and it worked! So for $20 I got a mic that
worked on the PS3 and the Wii and drums the worked on the PS3.

Sadly, the PS2 guitar would not work on the PS3 or the Wii. But my son
still has a lot of fun with what he has.

Now you might ask: why didn't I just go buy the complete set for the Wii?
Well, my plan was never to do that. He has been known to play things for a
short time and then drop it. Plus I encourage him to contribute a fair
amount to the cost of the games from his allowance. And to be honest I
wasn't keen on having the drums around. But for $20, it was fun to try and
get it to work and he's happy.

So if you have or find some PS2 instruments, recycle them and get some more
enjoyment from them.
