On the death of free wifi
July 2 2012, 11:42 AM
In the last few weeks i have gone into coffee shops to have a coffee and
check on email and twitter and I couldn't. In some cases, the cafe was
packed with people on computers. What i noticed today was people skyping
and using earphones. I expect whoever did the designs for the network for
these coffee shops didn't expect people to be hunkering down using high
bandwidth applications. (Didn't expect or didn't want to pay for.) At this point i think the coffee shops either need to block at least the
default ports for high bandwidth applications or they need to put in big
pipes to each coffee shop. A third and better option is make wifi a
membership privilege. That way you can encourage membership for promotions,
but you can also manage and sell wifi access. Give people a small amount of
free access but sell them credits for higher speed access. Of course then
you'll have some SLOs you might have to meet, but you can also get some
money too.
