We travel the rapids at night
September 21 2012, 8:46 PM
We travel the rapids at night. The long river, twisting and uncertain,
pulls us through the darkness. Some cling to the boat, fearful and frozen.
Others barely register the event, sitting sleeply in their spots. Most push
down their panic and struggle with their paddles, squinting to determine
what lies ahead and what they should do. We curse the darkness and wish for
the moonlight to guide us. Though there are moments of clarity, mainly we
thrash around. After a time, we silent compliment ourselves on our
abilities. Ha! Mastered this, we shout. Then the river gets treacherous,
and amongst the rocks and the narrows, we lose our crew mates one by one to
the danger that surrounds us. There are many times when the ride is smooth, and in those times we
convince ourselves it might always be that way. Some believe we will make
it to the end, to daybreak. Others think we start over again at the
beginning of the river. We are all in this boat together, though in the darkness we may seem alone.
Despite the darkness, we may make the most of this journey. For as much as
the trip is more important than the destination, the company we crew with
is more important than the trip. It is those that we stay close with and
help on the way who are the ones that make the passage better, safer.
