It is a bit pricey per hour in some cases - typically around the $10-11 mark - but it's definitely much cheaper than cab fare. ZipCar availability is very good downtown with its location/capita lessening the further you head away from the core. The furthest one I found was at Yonge and Empress Walk.
In my neighbourhood, I have access to 6 cars in 3 locations all in less than 10 minutes walk. YMMV (no pun intended). Hourly includes fuel and their iPhone app is quite excellent allowing you to remote lock/unlock the car and extend your rental duration (if available) with a few taps. I haven't done a comparison against AutoShare for about a year now since I signed up with ZipCar but at the time AutoShare charged less per hour but had a monthly fee. You'll have to do a bit of comparison shopping to get a better sense these days. Overall, I've been happy with ZipCar. The company keeps the cars clean and in working condition and is very communicative with their members (e-mail list and FaceBook page).
