Some thoughts on the Internet and the loss of patience (and what that loss entails)

I was listening to "Sun in an Empty Room" by The Weakerthans on CBC 3 using
my iPod Touch and the CBC's app just now, and after about 20 seconds, I
thought: I think I'll skip to the next tune. But of course, I couldn't,
because the app works like a real radio: you listen to song in sequence.
You don't skip around like you do when you listen to music on the Touch. As
I listened to the song I enjoyed it more and more. I was glad I did.

But that is becoming more atypical. New technology give you more and more
options to skip. This can be great, and it is not new (you could skip songs
on vinyl easily too). However, having to have the patience to listen can
be great, too. You have to exercise restraint. You have to be mindful of
what you are listening to. You might wish to try and appreciate it so you
can make the time more enjoyable.

When I used older technologies to listen to music, I found a lot of musci
that I grew to appreciate that I would not have discovered otherwise. That
patience paid off. I am not saying we should not allow people to skip, but
I would encourage people to skip less and appreciate what is front of them.
If it is worthwhile, then the patience will be rewarded. And patience, a
"muscle" in itself, is one we all could use strengthed.
