On social technology and the deliniation of our connectiveness

I am writing this because of a rant I saw about networked technology today.

It is not surprising that people, when they come into contact with
unpleasantness or hardship, should recoil from this. Not only may they do
that, but they may also make associations, good or bad, to help them avoid
this in the future. This explains to me why people start to want to avoid
things like Facebook or twitter or blogs because of things there that may
upset them. It makes sense, but it is a shame. For they lose something far
greater.

Before social technology, i would think of something i'd want to say to
someone, but time would pass and i'd forget. I might take a photo of
something, but few would see it. I'd analyze something or record something,
but it would be locked any in a journal. Now with social IT, that happens
less. Now, people become privy to those thoughts and ideas and media.
That's much better.

What's also better is that it underlines and strengthens the connections we
do have. We see how we are connected to each other. We are reminded of how
and when and what we share. The technology can reinforce our connections to
each other simply by being visible. The technology can emphasize and
reinforce the idea that we are not isolated and alone.

What i like about social media and tech is that it not only allows us
different ways to connect to each other, but each time we make a connexion,
we can see the strings that connect us, and when we pluck on these strings,
the sound resonates and reverberates and amplifies within the social media.
Just like the telephone and the telegraph, social technology magnifies the
way we communicate with each other and transforms our relationships. And
just like those technologies, it makes the world smaller and brings those
that we love and care for closer.

As always, thanks for reading this.
